  EMPLOYEE TESTIMONIALS

     Mike
     Production Supervisor
     Villanova University, 2002
     Ryan Homes

In between building homes for our customers and intensive production training, Mike finds time to talk to us.

What would you say is the ONE thing you enjoy most about working at NVR?
Ryan Homes works hard to develop a strong sense of togetherness among its employees. They foster this ideal by sponsoring countless division outings. Because of this, I have had the opportunity to develop personal relationships with my colleagues as well as professional relationships. This makes work something to look forward to, not just something you do to get paid.

Take us through a typical day on the job.
I work with a diverse group of people - colleagues, subcontractors, homeowners, etc. A typical day - as 'typical' as it can be - includes walking all of the homes under construction, meeting with homeowners, subcontractors, and more. Technical aspects of the job include structural frame checks, meetings with inspectors, budgeting money for houses. I personally enjoy being responsible for several million dollars worth of homes, and overseeing their completion. Each time a home is finished, you can actually see the results of several months' work. With that comes an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

Tell us about your most memorable day on the job?
It was the day I completed my first house from start to finish. I oversaw the complete construction of the home from the pre-construction meeting until the day of settlement. I also developed a great working relationship with the homeowner. The gratitude they showed me made the experience really special.

How does NVR support your career advancement?
They go to great lengths with both time and money to support career advancement. Training for production includes an eight-month Production Training Program that combines both field and classroom training. Every Supervisor is paired with a Project Manager who oversees his or her daily progress.

Is there anything about NVR and/or your particular position that you would want job candidates to know?
One of the most important aspects of this job that candidates should know is the autonomy that comes along with this job. Not many companies offer their entry-level hires the type of management responsibility and decision-making opportunities that NVR does.

What would you tell someone to convince them to choose a career in homebuilding? What would you tell someone to convince them to choose NVR?
I would tell potential candidates they will learn professional skills such as organization, time management, decision-making, and more. In addition, they will learn one of the most practical skills of all - how to build a home.

Also, NVR offers opportunities for promotion, and a work environment that is casual but professional. It's the perfect setting for a young professional who desires management experience, but doesn't want to be stuck in a cubicle all day.

Tell us about your best experience with a homebuyer. What made them so happy?
It was the one of the first houses I oversaw. It was couple's first single family home, and they showed a genuine appreciation for everything I was able to do for them. Seeing to the needs of this particular family made the home-buying experience a great one for them.

Tell us about your best collaborative experience with a co-worker. What did you accomplish/achieve?
My best collaborative experience with a co-worker was with my former Project Manager. I was making the transition from a dependent supervisor to an effective manager. Through countless question-and-answer sessions and infinite patience, he taught me the skills to become an effective Project Manager.
